Why Finding the Right Corporate Instructor Is Harder Than It Looks
A strong CV is a starting point, not the whole story. Here is what matters when selecting someone to deliver a business-critical learning program.

The gap between knowing and teaching
An instructor may have impressive technical experience and certifications yet struggle to make complex concepts accessible to a particular audience. Subject expertise, delivery experience and the ability to translate theory into practical decisions are related strengths, but they are not interchangeable.
That difference becomes especially important when the learners include a mix of technical specialists, managers and new entrants. A program that works for one group may be unsuitable for another.
Five dimensions worth validating
Before reviewing instructor profiles, define what successful delivery looks like. That creates a more useful basis for comparing potential instructors.
- Topic depth: Can the instructor handle the specific tools, versions and use cases?
- Audience fit: Have they taught people at a similar experience level?
- Practical learning: Can they lead relevant demonstrations, labs or exercises?
- Delivery fit: Are they effective in the required language, time zone and format?
- Reliability: Is their availability confirmed for preparation and delivery?
Make the brief more specific
Replace broad requests such as “an Azure trainer” with a clear description of the modules, learner roles, prerequisite knowledge, expected hands-on work and delivery constraints. A better brief usually leads to a more relevant shortlist.
A short alignment conversation or sample exercise can provide evidence that a résumé alone cannot.
The real objective
Instructor selection should not be a search for the longest list of qualifications. It should be a structured effort to find someone who can meet the learning objective, work with the audience and deliver under the actual conditions of the engagement.
KEY TAKEAWAY
Choose for proven fit with the requirement—not just a recognizable profile.
